ALTART

1a space has always believed that art education need not be confined to the classroom. Learning can be a process of co-creation, an exploration, an adventure, or even a work still in progress. 'ALTART' is created precisely for these possibilities. Running from June to October 2026, the project brings together 7 selected cultural practitioners with innovative visions through an open call, transforming their imaginations of art education into practical public engagements. Covering everything from flexible standalone experiences to progressive multi-session series, we invite you to join us and collectively expand art education beyond traditional educational boundaries.

ALTering the expected: Let ART creation in. Integrating daily perception, community observation, and public participation, the ALTART art education project steps out of the classroom and into the neighbourhood, where 7 groups of creators and the public co-create and inspire one another. We cordially invite you to join us at 1a space for a three-day project showcase and creator sharing sessions.

The showcase will feature a diverse range of practices, material research, and artworks by local ALTART creators working across various mediums—all revolving around daily perception, community observation, spatial imagination, and sustainable materials. Through a series of engaging, experimental public collaborations, let us create space for unscripted creativity and endless possibilities.

Rethinking the Boundaries and Possibilities of Art Education, Community Art, and Social Design

Dylan KWOK

Born in 80s Hong Kong, Dylan studied in Vancouver, Toronto, and Helsinki. Drawn to Nordic design, he earned a Master's in Spatial and Furniture Design from Finland. Returning as a Young Design Talent in 2009, he worked for universities. His 2017 "Hack-a-Bench" revolutionized seating. His artworks appeared at Japan's Oku-noto Triennale, the 2022 Guangdong Nanhai Festival, and Sai Kung Hoi Festival. He founded an NGO to run BOAF, a community space near Mong Kok's bird market, promoting hands-on creativity. Since 2019, he apprenticed under Master Chan Lok Choi, the last birdcage craftsman. He writes Open Birdcages to document this craft.

King Chung SIU

King Chung SIU was an educator, social designer, curator, and cultural practitioner. He was formerly Associate Dean and Programme Leader of the Social Design programme at the School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University before his retirement. As a co-founder of the Community Museum Project, he has pioneered socially engaged art and design practices that connect community research, heritage, education, and public participation. His notable projects include Street as Museum, Lee Tung Street, Museum of Complaints, Riverside Scene of Local Agriculture, and In Search of Marginalized Wisdom, which explore local knowledge, everyday creativity, and under-represented histories. Through teaching, research, exhibitions, and public programmes, he advocates socially engaged approaches to art, design, and community learning.

WONG Tin Yan

A Hong Kong artist who initially specialized in creating art from discarded wood, he has participated in large-scale public art projects in Asia, and his works are collected by the Hong Kong Museum of Art. In addition, he has been engaged in art education for more than 20 years. From 2019 to 2021, he was invited to collaborate with "M+ Rover". From 2017 to 2024, he ran the alternative art space "Form Society" on Tai Nan Street in Sham Shui Po. In recent years, he has participated in many community art sessions and workshops.

CHANG Hoi Wood

CHANG Hoi Wood was born in Hong Kong and studied architecture. He practised at EDGE Design Institute and oversaw the project Suitcase House, Commune by the Great Wall (Beijing 2002). He was the artist-in-residence at the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany (2003 – 05). His art projects include If there is a garden, where would I be? (2025), Geometry of the Sentiments (2024), Dimension of Living: A House is (2020), Island_Peninsula - Glamor, Efficiency, Orderliness & Constant Change: Making of the Hong Kong Architecture Landscape (2019), Horti Cultus (2004), SinoOneOneSix (2000), SIXHIBITION (1999), etc. He is currently coordinating Place-making and Arts Tech projects funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

Exploring the Multiple Identities of Artist-Teachers

Jeff LEUNG

Jeff LEUNG is currently a part-time lecturer at several local universities, teaching arts administration, visual culture and contemporary art. Jeff is also a curator who actively curates exhibitions of Hong Kong art in different forms and venues. These include projects promoting social inclusion: Be Exchange Students: Achievement Exhibition about the Artistic Diary of Community Living (2024), Common SENse: An Art Bus Exhibition about SEN art workshops (2021) and In Your Backyard: Tin Shui Wai Park Festival (2021), as well as SSparkle! Neo Travel: Creative and Cultural Docent @ Community (2017), an exhibition about cultural docent work.

Leung also creates "engaging guided tours" using Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), encouraging audiences to develop their own independent ways of viewing art. He has held such tours for various art projects, including the mobile art project DingLab (Art × Tech Exhibition 3.0) (2025), the arts education programme Jockey Club Contemporary Art Literacy and Appreciation Programme (JCCALAP) (2023), and Thriving Art Hub: Wong Chuk Hang's Arts Hopping Delight (2023).

TANG Kwok Hin

Tang Kwok Hin (born 1983, Hong Kong) earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts from the Department of Fine Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2006 and 2008, respectively. Tang is a mixed-media artist whose work is deeply rooted in introspection, often displaying autoethnographic characteristics. His artistic journey is closely interwoven with complex environments, within which he explores universal emotions, thoughts, and essences amidst the chaos. He received the first prize at the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial Award in 2009, the Young Artist Award (Visual Arts) at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards in 2010, and was a recipient of the Asian Cultural Council Fellowship in 2013.

Flora YIU

Flora Yiu is an independent curator based in Hong Kong and a graduate of Lingnan University’s Department of Cultural Studies. She has worked with the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and arts and cultural digital media platform The Culturist. Her work encompasses arts technology, performing arts, and arts education, featuring projects such as the Jockey Club Arts Tech Imagineering Education Programme, the grand opening of the Xiqu Centre, Art in True Light exhibition (2025, 2026) at True Light School of Hong Kong, and In Memory exhibition (2024) at Form Society.

Chris CHAN Kam Shing

Chris CHAN Kam Shing was born in Hong Kong, graduated with Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting) in 2004 and Master of Fine Art in 2006 from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University co-presented with the Hong Kong Art School, HKAC. He obtained his Master of Arts degree in Practical Philosophy at the Hong Kong Lingnan University in 2011. He is a graphic designer, art teacher and mixed media sculpture artist. Chris is the council member and chairman of Visual Arts group of Hong Kong Arts Development Council previously.

Venus CHAN Tsz Ching

Versatile artist whose work spans painting and ceramics. With a keen eye for the spaces between buildings, explores the intricate relationship between architecture and landscape, a sense of alienation, showcasing the works across Taiwan and Hong Kong.

I establish my personal pottery brand "Under The Stone".
Driven by a passion for creativity and craftmanship, "Under The Stone" reflects my another side, producing unique, handcrafted pieces that blend traditional techniques with modern aesthetics.

Vika CHENG

Vika CHENG is a Hong Kong paper artist and stop-motion animator known for transforming paper into intricate and playful visual stories. With a background in journalism and communication from HK and a master’s degree in Fine Art from the UK, she brings together craftsmanship, storytelling and moving image in her creative practice. Her work spans paper installations, commercial campaigns, workshops and original short-form content, often exploring local culture, everyday life. She has collaborated with brands and organisations including Fortnum & Mason, Hong Kong Tramways, Hong Kong Disneyland.

Reds CHEUNG

Reds CHEUNG is a Hong Kong-based visual artist. Reds studied visual arts at the HKBU Academy of Visual Arts, postgraduate visual culture studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and contemporary art at the Estonian Academy of Arts. His practice encompasses multimedia installations in galleries and public spaces, showcasing criticising modes of art media presentation. Reds’ work is underpinned by an ongoing engagement with subtleties, whiteness and cleanliness in life for the criticism of art institutions, professionalism and the labour force.

Reds' works have been exhibited in various locations, including Hong Kong, Japan, Estonia, and Lithuania. He was awarded the "Best 7 Galleries" award at Artvilnius21 and a Special Mention award at TASE 21. His work has been collected by the Art Promotional Office HK.

Reds is currently a member of the Board of Directors of 1a space, the project director of Laichankee Studio, and an HKBU Lecturer.

ALTART: Open Call for Art Education Programme

We are now launching an open call for cultural practitioners with innovative visions. You are invited to transform your imagination of art education into actions that can meet, engage, and be practiced with the public. The programme aims to bring together art and cultural workers, educators, and the public from diverse backgrounds to collectively expand art education models beyond educational institutions, continuing 1a space’s long-standing focus on community connection and critical learning.

We hope to see proposals that include:

Art educational approaches that are not typically found within traditional curricula

Art education ideas you have long wanted to try but lacked a platform to realise

Learning approaches that open up dialogue, sensory experience, and embodied participation

Selected participants will be responsible for:

Teaching activities: inviting the public to enter your educational world

Sharing session: an open exchange with other creators and educators

Project showcase: presenting your concepts, methods, and outcomes

The programme period runs from June to October 2026, with September to October as the main period for teaching activities and showcase.

We provide:

HKD 20,000 project stipend

Venue and basic equipment support

A space that supports experimentation, incompleteness, and exploration

Materials from unsuccessful applicants will be destroyed within 30 days after selection

In early May 2026, a selection panel of 8 members conducted an in-depth review and rigorous assessment of the submissions, based on the criteria of originality, feasibility, audience relevance, and alignment with the project’s mission.
