1a space Internship Programme – Summer 2018 (4 Headcounts) If you are passionate about art and looking for an internship experience with flexible working schedule during your studying, welcome to join the 1a space Internship Programme - 2018 Summer this year to explore one of the most prominent art organization in Hong Kong. It will be a unique opportunity for current students in Arts, culture and humanities disciplines in obtaining contemporary art exhibition experience in a gallery setting. The intern will work closely with the management team of 1a space to gain insights in art/cultural project development, event logistics, exhibition setup and dismantling, as well as other art administrative tasks. Since books are not only words and images, we would adopt the unconventional way of reading, like from left to right, and explore other possibilities of “book-reading”. Through different combinations of body and materials, we are inspired to reinterpret the definition and meaning of a book. 2. [endif]Connecting Kowloon City District Through a series of creative exercises, participants are encouraged to use objects from our daily lives in different and accessible ways and create artworks by building and enhancing the bonding with the community of Kowloon City district. 3. Artistry workshop Inspired by participant’s relationship with their family members, participants will be encouraged to express their own stories through oil painting, sculptures, and installation art. Yeung has been an art education columnist with Sunday Mingpao since 2009. YU Shuk Pui Bobby Born in Hong Kong, traveling in time to visit Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Chaozhou before seven years old. She makes conceptual artworks, sculptures, and performances, using the body as a medium. By creating situations and breaking the passivity of the spectator. Has learnt book-binding while studied in school. In the past three years, she has sustained a preoccupation with sexual politics and female exploitation. Start from this year, she’s fascinated on gene and human body extension. Bobby received a BA from Hong Kong Baptist University. She has exhibited her works at Listhus Gallery(Iceland); A Place Gallery & Studios(Florida); Youkobo Art Space Gallery(Tokyo); Swatch Art Peach Hotel(Shanghai); Para-site, 100ft. Gallery, 1a Space(Hong Kong). She has completed several residencies at 3331 Art Chiyoda (Tokyo), 435 Art Studio(Taiwan) and Listhus Space (Iceland). Some of her book-binding works are collected by Hong Kong Art Museum and Savannah College of Arts and Design(Hong Kong). IP Wai Lung Born in the Guangdong Province, China, Ip Wai Lung is a local artist residing in Hong Kong now. In 1996, he moved to Hong Kong with his mother for a family reunion with his father right before the handover. As an immigrant, identity has always been an issue for him despite being educated in Hong Kong since his young age. In 2015, he went to Tibet to practise Zen Buddhism, such experience further confirmed his determination of becoming an artist. Ip is a self-learned artist who has participated in a number of local co-exhibitions and held personal exhibitions including Para Site and C&G. His artwork explores political issues, taboos and identities in a spontaneous and humorous fashion. Ip believes in the power of public art, he interferes in the existing social systems with his artwork, through the conversations with different entities he delves into the possibility of having new systems in a bid to reconstruct the imagination of society and the world from a personal perspective. Transparent Cube Space 19 May 2018 - 17 June 2018 , 1a space 1a space proudly presents Transparent Cube Space, a contemporary art exhibition curated by Cheung King-wai Reds (張景威). The project was the second phase of 1a space 's 21st Century Art Incubator. The exhibition will discuss on "white cube" in order to review the function of a proper exhibition space and the trend of art presentation in the 21st century. Through this project, curators and artists could rethink the relationship between themselves, art space, audiences, art trend and even society. The audience should follow a designated route to view the exhibition. Audiences are encouraged to re-experience and reimagine the definition of White Cube and what construct a viewing experience. Because of this segregation, it established a formal presentation-appreciation system. About 21st Century Art Incubator 1a space aims to provide emerging artists and curatorial talents a platform for conceptual and experimental art to fill the gap between larger public institutions and commercial ventures. 1a space partners with The Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong (ADAHK) and the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) in ‘Life Planning Programme – Arts Industry Exploration’ in coming May to July 2018. Students will be actively engaged in discussion with artists and cultural workers in different disciplines. The programme not only aims at introducing the local cultural and arts industries but also inspiring the students to discover and create more possibilities in their life planning. The Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong (ADAHK) present first ‘Life Planning Programme – Arts Industry Exploration’ from March to July 2018. Through a series of activities including dialogue with artists, visits to arts education organisations or community arts groups and participation in programmes of the West Kowloon Cultural District, students will be actively engaged in discussion with artists and cultural workers in different disciplines. The programme not only aims at introducing the local cultural and arts industries, but also inspiring the students to discover and create more possibilities in their life planning. Hong Kong’s legacy lives on in its cultural diversity and hybridity. Yuan Yang-City at the Mixed of Time is an interdisciplinary and performative art tour aims on manifesting the historical and cultural significance of the city to the visitors from around the globe, to inspire a better appreciation of the importance and value of the art and cultures in Hong Kong. The tour will visit the most underrated heritage and cultural spots of Kowloon City with contemporary performances by young and emerging Hong Kong contemporary artists. Roaming Storytelling Bamboo Theatre Artist： Lau Hok Shing, Hanison Bamboo Theatre is a temporary Cantonese opera theaters and worshipping halls for community festivals to praise the charitable and pious deeds of the deities, most notably the Yu Lan /Hungry Ghost Festival and the Cheung Chau Bun Festival. The framework and pillars are made of bamboo and galvanized iron, which is a time-proven technique reflecting the spirit of Hong Kong traditional architecture. Roaming Storytelling Bamboo Theatre is a mobile theatre that looks like a performing stage in a much smaller scale. The performance of Hanison Lau will be taken place in the Kai Tak Campus of the Academy of Visual Arts in Hong Kong Baptist University and the Hoi Sham Park to reveal forgotten folklores and cultural myths of our rapidly changing city. Artist Ling Chung Wan Kevin ’s mobile puppet theatre - Art Hawker 2 is made of wooden plate and plastic will demonstrate Hanison’s stories by a combination of different puppetry techniques. It means to explore the hidden aspects of the local history and traditional customs, to reconstruct the human relationships in the old Hong Kong and reflect the transformation of the city through oral history, thus to reimagine the meaning of heritage conservation. Two stages, a story-teller and a puppet show create and inspire a mutual dialogue aiming to present the most quintessential contours of Hong Kong. Art Hawker 2 Artist： Ling Chung Wan Kevin Kowloon City Rickshaw Driver Artist： Cheung King-wai Reds Kowloon Walled City, once considered the densest settlement on earth does not exist anymore. Though demolished 20 years ago, fascination in Kowloon Walled City just continues to grow, fired in part by the many urban legends that forever swirl around this quiet park and mysterious boundary. If you search “Kowloon Walled City” on the google map, there’s no single clue about the chaos in the midst of civilization. There’s a large contradiction with the searching result from google image. After its destruction, one may find it difficult to reimagine a vision of the Walled City by its current emptiness. Participants will be invited to walk on the boundary and eavesdrop the hidden myths of the Kowloon Walled City, or to tell your own story. Lau Hok Shing, Hanison Hanison Lau uses sculptural form to present his ideas; his 3-dimensional pieces speak some of his personal stories, presenting different visual elements with ready-made materials. He usually employs history and literature, especially adapted from Chinese culture as referential languages and properties to appropriate his works. He used sculpture and drawing to represent the poetic elements vested in contemporary visual art form, and his works demonstrate a strong record of personal action. Lau has now been working as an independent artist and Lecturer at Hong kong Baptist University. He received a bachelor degree of arts (Fine Art) from the RMIT University in 2005 and received a master Degree in Fine art at RMIT in 2007.He was selected one of the highlighted artists by the Hong Kong Art Promotion Office for its “Artists in Neighbourhood scheme II 2008”. He took part in the Artist-in-residence project in Portland, USA in 2008 and South Korea in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014.In the last few years, he has been exhibiting his works extensively in USA, Australia, Paris, South Korea, mainland China and Hong Kong. Various local and his work has been collected locally and internationally. He was awarded the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2016 - Award for Young Artist(Visual Arts)I in 2016. Ling Chung-wan Kevin Ling Chung-wan Kevin(b.Hong Kong 1994) graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University in 2017 ,He was awarded the Tuna Prize at the AVA BA Graduation Exhibition 2017. Through community-based research and material exploration to creates the simplest resonance.　Alternate perspective towards urban elements can be found in Ling's work. His works concern about the relationship and connection in community and a sense of curiosity. Cheung King-wai Reds Reds Cheung is an independence visual arts professional, experienced in local visual arts sector with good relations contact and excellent communication skills. Beside independent practice in visual arts and culture studies, Reds is also familiar with teaching and activity organizing in art, with working experience at art gallery and visual arts institute. Specialize in community art, installation art, drawing and visual communication design. He is now exploring in the way to foster young audience in visual arts by practicing experimental art curating, and parallel to local creative industry development.
