青年藝術及文化管理人才培育計劃
1a space presents “青年藝術及文化管理人才培育計劃”, a series of talks with leading experts and practitioners in the local art industry. Between 18 -22 December, the five-day workshop offers a rare opportunity to have intimate conversations with art administrators and founders of alternative art spaces in Hong Kong, while situated in the spaces themselves. With a particular focus on Kowloon City District, the workshop covers a wide range of topics from new media and community art administration to the preservation of traditional craftmanship.

New media is an emerging art field which remains hard to define. It is mainly because media art is an ongoing process which encompasses artwork created with new media technologies, such as 3D printing and biotechnology. If new media is constantly evolving and changing, what is new media art administration like? How do art administrators embrace the interdisciplinary of new media art?
Angel Leung and moderator Myra Chan will discuss the unique characteristic related to this new form of art administration and the challenges it faces. A large part of the talk will focus on identifying the skillsets required in the industry and offering concrete advice on how to develop them.
Videotage is a leading Hong Kong-based non-profit organization specializing in the promotion, presentation, creation and preservation of new media art across all languages, shapes and forms. Founded in 1986, Videotage has evolved from an artist-run collective to an influential network, supporting creative use of media art to explore, investigate and connect with issues that are of significant social, cultural and historical value.

The talk will begin with an overview of some key moments in the history of community art in Hong Kong. Mainly following the career progression of Peggy Chan, the talk takes an information format of intimate conversation between friends, while looking at how Chan started her prolific career as artist and community art administrator, discussing what are the new possibilities of creating collaboration between artists and communities.
Art Together Limited, established in 2014 as a charitable organization, is a non-profit art group based in Hong Kong. Art Together Limited mainly works on art projects and exhibitions at outdoor area and public space in Hong Kong, in an attempt to reach different communities in a mobile fashion.

In recent years, contemporary art has become a synonym for wealth, luxury, and exclusivity. But is that all that contemporary art is? What is missing in the mainstream understanding of the contemporary art industry? Where can one find and engage with art that is not presented as a commodity?
In this talk, we hear from artists and founders of Hidden Space, Katie Ho, Kay Mei Ling Beadman, and Isabella Ng about their place in the HK art ecosystem. Drawing on their experiences of both being artists and running an independent art space, the speakers provide an insight into ways of supporting artists, and arts and cultural activity planning.
Hidden Space is an independent artist-run space founded in 2017 by three Hong Kong artists, Katie Ho, Kay Mei Ling Beadman, and Isabella Ng. They work with artists and curators to develop and present experimental installation and performance artwork, providing opportunities for artists to extend their practice in a non-commercial and non-institutional environment. The space is hidden in a working industrial building in Kwai Hing.

With more and more museums, public art institutions and commercial galleries opening in Hong Kong, the demand for professional art technicians has increased drastically in the past years. Many artists and people who is passionate in art started see this career path as an alternative means to be involved in the art world. Leo Wong and Yu Kei Kei, artists and founders of Pointsman will discuss how he started his career in art production. In the discussion, participants will have the opportunity to visit his productions studio, gain first-hand knowledge on the industry. Wong will also share his valuable experience on artwork installation.
Founded in 2013, Pointsman Art Creation is a team of Exhibition Curators & Producers in Arts, Culture and Heritage. Our team is dedicated to bring art closer to the public by engaging in a wide range of events and exhibitions. They are not limited by the conventions and are constantly pushing boundaries, which presents the public new curatorial experiences. They worked as exhibition consultant for the “TKO Heritage Post”, curated and produced a painting exhibition “Borrowed People” and constructed for a glass curtain wall public art at Lam Tin Complex.

Yan, founder of Coutou will share with us her art career from studying woodworking in Taiwan to founding Coutou Studio. Moderated by Arthur the conversation discusses how to preserve traditional craftmanship such as Chinese woodwork. In the recent years, Coutou studio has been working on upcrycling unwanted tree or wood waste to create functional furniture using traditional and modern woodworking technique. Touch on the environmental responsibility of art, the speakers will examine creative possible ways of integrating traditional craftsmanship in today’s creative industry and how should interested young professionals start their career.
In between carpenters & craftsmanship, human & trees, there are lots of possibilities. Devoting to craftsmanship in Hong Kong, is like walking in the rye. When Coutou Woodworking Studio keep moving and exploring, their collective believe that they are not alone.
Learning from the trees and craftsmanship, is like understanding how the world operates, they try their best to pass on those forgotten carpenters' skills and treasure the neglected resources, turn the craftsmanship as tools to create a better future on what they concern.
