- Bamboo Theatre Scaffolder —— Master Chan Yuk Kwong
The Bamboo Rotunda stands as a testament to the fusion of traditional craftsmanship, as interpreted by a bamboo master in Hong Kong, and the modern design concept of collaborative place-making. The bamboo master and artisans have put enormous effort and hard work into the Bamboo Rotunda construction. We are pleased to interview the key figure behind building the Bamboo Rotunda — Master Chan Yuk Kwong. “Constructing the Bamboo Rotunda is tough because it needs traditional skills as well as considers environmental impact, and only bamboo can be used, not wood, due to project requirements.” The Bamboo Rotunda design completely differs from conventional Bamboo-shed theatres for Operas for Deities. In addition, the Bamboo Rotunda construction has become increasingly difficult due to environmental issues, ranging from rain to tidal. These factors are quite a challenge to Master Chan. The construction site is limited and located on the seaside. Thus, he spent a lot of time thinking about how to solve those problems and restrictions in the Bamboo Rotunda construction. He did admit that there were times when he wanted to give up. Yet, he gritted his teeth and persisted in the construction to reach the original design by the Architect of Bamboo Rotunda Haynie Sze. As the Bamboo Rotunda nears completion, we invite you to join us at Yim Tin Tsai village for our upcoming events. Here, you can witness the remarkable craftsmanship of Master Chan and other bamboo artisans, a testament to their dedication and skill.

Participating artists include: Yim Suet Wing Michelle Yim Suet Wing, Michelle (b. 2000, Hong Kong) graduated in 2022 with Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (RMIT) and Hong Kong Art School, majoring in Ceramics. The works of Yim revolve around the gaps and damaged parts from real life and the resulting associations. Based on different scenes, such as the sewage outlet on the wall, peeling concrete facade, and garden fence with gaps, Yim creates grotesque, colourful, toy-like fantasy objects by ceramic casting and grouting. Through these playful works, revealing the absurdity of everyday life. Toi Yee Doris Toi-Yee’s sculptural installation and performance practice explores liminality associated with transitions. Her methodology of material experimentation endows her to transform these inescapable physical, psyche or metaphorical spaces when inspecting the lost identities, forgotten histories and intimate narratives in marginalised communities. By juxtaposing intimate and erratic materiality as a subversive tool, she challenges issues such as personal politics, violence, transformation and desire. Toi-Yee also writes autoethnographic poems with collected fragments of psychological catharsis, addressing Friedrich Nietzsche’s chapter . Graduating from RMIT University, Hong Kong Art School and Central Saint Martins, Toi-Yee is currently based in Hong Kong. Cheung Ying May Maria Maria Ying-May Cheung is a Hong Kong-based artist who primarily engages with photography. Her artistic practice originates from her inquiries into the retention, preservation, and historical perspectives of everyday life, reflecting the erosion of time. In 2022, Maria obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art from the RMIT University and the Hong Kong Art School; and received the Dean’s List Award and the 1a space Award. She completed her Higher Diploma of Fine Arts in 2020 at Hong Kong Art School and was granted the Outstanding Artwork Award and the Academic Performance Award. Her photographs were exhibited at the Pao Galleries (2022, 2023), Yrellag Gallery (2022), Fine Art Asia (2021), and The Gallery of Hong Kong Art School (2020). So Yuk Cheung So So Yuk Cheung graduated from the Hong Kong Art School / RMIT University Bachelor of Arts(Fine Art) in 2023, majoring in sculpture. His works are mainly mixed-media sculptures. By deconstructing the symbols of materials/objects, he creates new images of them Toby Wong Toby Wong was born and based in Hong Kong who engaged in digital retouching and image production for over twenty years. During that time, her interest in visual art, painting, and the beauty of natural forms emerged. She explored fine art further and developed knowledge of painting and other mediums.
Somewhere on the sea, there are countless sole floating platforms. Occasionally, they approach each other, at where they meet may generate different shapes of land through different forms of collision. They merge, push, or separate. The process of encounter is uncontrollable yet malleable. Initiated by the Cultivating Peace Project of Hong Kong Baptist University, it involves a group of university students, secondary school students and Hong Kong artists to meet and work together for several months. Through community tours, group sharings, creative exercises, etc., they get to know each other and explore the possibility of interpersonal and community peace. Through a series of works, the exhibition attempts to explore the changing distance and boundary between people, trace the balance point of relationship in the process, and at the same time connect to a broader context of the local community. Floating platforms challenge the trust between us and others. Before stability, may this process bring you to some wider lands. 展覽日期 Exhibition Period: 4-14/5/2023 11:00 - 19:00 地點 Venue: 1a space(香港九龍土瓜灣馬頭角道63號牛棚藝術村14號 Unit 14, Cattle Depot Artist Village, 63 Ma Tau Kok Road, To Kwa Wan, Kowloon, Hong Kong) 開幕 Opening: 日期 Date: 4/5/2023 (四 Thur) 時間 Time: 17:30-18:30 地點 Venue: 香港九龍土瓜灣馬頭角道63號牛棚藝術村8號 Unit 8, Cattle Depot Artist Village, 63 Ma Tau Kok Road, To Kwa Wan, Kowloon, Hong Kong 參展藝術家 Participating artists: 島仔藝術 Dou Chai Arts 鄧國騫 Kwok-hin Tang Rajat Sharma 梁翠萍 Sally Leung 李卓媛 Sharon Lee 蕭俞 Zoe Siu 參與學校 Participating schools: 聖公會諸聖中學 S.K.H.
