I THINK IT RAINS Burger Collection is pleased to announce the launch of a three-year exhibition and research project developed and realized with 1a space, an independent artist-run organization. The project represents a further installment of theQuadrilogy by Burger Collection. The project will open in May 2013 with the multi-disciplinary exhibition I Think It Rains at the heritage site of the Cattle Depot Artist Village in Hong Kong. It will feature some 20 artists and writers from Hong Kong and abroad. PROJECT DESCRIPTION I Think It Rains brings together artists, writers, and critics invited by Burger Collection and 1a space in a tentative of creating a cross-disciplinary collaborative model.

 The collaboration began to coalesce in November 2012 when the core-groups of 1a space and Burger Collection, consisting of the artists Enoch Cheung and Choi Yan-chi, curator Daniel Kurjaković and writer Cally Yu, embarked on more formal conversations. Early gatherings addressed the question of how to create a meaningful context of presentation, at this juncture in time, for diverse artistic approaches of a more experimental nature. The core-groups’ dialogs revolved around the issue of how to construct a platform allowing participants to progressively develop, re-examine, and transform their contributions. Plotted as a platform for sustainable activities, an overall time frame of three years was set. Within this frame, the project aims at developing one possible mode of collaboration, connecting a local and an international organization, which are both mindful of the cultural specificity of Hong Kong and of transnational currents of contemporary artistic practice. According to artist Choi Yan-chi, the project proposes to “set up parameters to activate loose teams of art practitioners for on-going dialogs and discussions about various models of cultural production.”

 In its first year of activities under the roof of Burger Collection’s Quadrilogy, the project will, according to curator Daniel Kurjaković, look at “how artists have developed succinct ways to question the relationships between history and histories, cognitive patterns and social behavior in the present and impulses for the future. Artists have been keen on underlining the artistic process by using various sorts of research that seamlessly link or interestingly contrast different temporal levels.” The first exhibition, I Think It Rains, will emphasize the multi-faceted practices of the participating artists and writers ranging from mixed-media work to installations, pseudo-writing, or radio-programs, and the like. I Think It Rains will take place on the premises of the Cattle Depot Artist Village, a heritage site located in the raw and unpolished environment of the old town center of Kowloon, providing a unique venue for alternative works to happen. It will consist of new and existing works by artists from Hong Kong and abroad, spreading out in the various spaces of the Cattle Depot as well as in the public area. Performances and multi-functional project rooms will supplement the exhibition. A full day of performances and happenings, both inside the Cattle Depot and in the adjacent urban area of Mong Kok, will enable visitors to experience the exhibition on the backdrop of various real-time events. The launch will also see the presentation of the first issue of the magazineTorrent (due out in April 2013), introduced by Burger Collection last year, and will include, amongst others, various artists’ contributions, and an in-depth conversation about art production in Hong Kong. The first phase of the project, unfolding from May to December 2013, will be rounded off with a second edition of the exhibition, which will start in autumn. Its major components will consist in artist residencies, panels and workshops, as well as the production of ephemera and a catalog documenting the yearlong productions. The title I Think It Rains is borrowed from the homonymic poem by Nigerian poet Wole Soyinka. Rather than circumscribing a topic or theme, the title points to some of the motifs of the project: a sense of physical actuality and sensuality, of details and multiplicity, of a continuous present, of a porous quality of space as well as of the relations between the imaginary and the material. 1a space is proud to present the solo exhibition of renowned local artist Annie Wan Lai-kuen. For Annie Wan, molding is not only an important process in her art but also a key concept. It stems from her sensitivity to everyday life and keen observation of mundane objects, which means that molding is her chosen method for examining and depicting reality. The copy mimics the appearance of the original. While it brings to mind the existence of the original object, it would never contain the substance of the latter. But it is precisely this gap between the copy and the original that leaves space for imagination and interpretation. Wong Wai Yim, lives & works in Hong Kong & Paris. Master Degree of Art & Post Master in National Art School in France. In 2005, she came back to Hong Kong & is working between HK & Paris until now. Exhibited in Hong Kong, China, Europe, South Korea, etc. She works with many different media for her art: Video Art, Installation, Performance Art, Photography, Documentation film, Writing and Glass Art. After the previous art events: “A story for a story”, “Murmur”, Artist WONG Wai Yim would like to create a continuous project in the idea of exchanging stories. It is about the "sex toy story”. In conversation with friends in Hong Kong, artist found that many people never went to sex shop and never bought sex toy. Some of them don’t have idea to buy, or don’t know where to buy, or never masturbated. Artist wonders for this “hypothesis”. While 1a space is known for our commitment to work with young and emerging artists, we also see the need to provide continuous support to mid-career artists as they often lack sustained exposure. 1a space therefore aims to provide a decent space and professional curatorial support to these artists who persevere in producing high-quality works. Theupcoming solo exhibition of Hong Kong artist Chris Chan Kam-shing demonstrates our commitment to this belief. ‘Know Thyself’ suggests a possible way to see and interpret the world. Chan uses fragile and volatilematerials to reveal the uncertainty and malleability of the physical world. In this way Chan constructs an unstable and dynamic field, in which one can embark on a journey of self-discovery and exploration. 台灣自1980年代末期解嚴之後，在社會經濟的繁榮發展以及政府文化政策的推動之下，企業參與藝文事務逐漸蔚為風氣，民間基金會與博物館的成立提供藝術思想以及創作重要的交流和實踐平台，更促發藝術文化的多樣化發展。在政府窒礙的官僚機制以及短絀的有限資源條件之下，民間企業對於藝文事務的參與如何產生意義，形成影響，發揮作用。本演講將介紹台灣民間企業參與藝術文化事務的背景與現況，並期待與香港藝術界進行分享與交流。 此講座由亞洲藝術文獻庫及1a Space合辦。 講者背景： 賴香伶是台灣獨立策展人，她於美國堪薩斯大學藝術史研究所獲藝術史碩士，又曾在美國華盛頓特區喬治華盛頓大學博物館學進行研究。她曾任台北市立美術館及國立台灣美術館的策展人，在台灣擁有超過20年的藝術策展及管理經驗。她曾擔當的職務包括台北當代藝術館館長、帝門藝術教育基金會執行長、國家文化藝術基金會獎助組總監以及上海外灘美術館創館館長。在2001年，她獲台灣國家文化藝術家基金會以及美國傅爾布萊基金會共同獎助赴美考察研究。她現時是帝門藝術教育基金會、以及春之文化基金會董事。 日期：2013年3月7日（星期四） 時間：晚上六點半至八點 地點：香港上環荷李活道233號荷李活商業中心10樓 A Space *講座將以國語進行

Since the late 80s after martial law, Taiwan has focused on the development of its economy. Under the cultural policy, which encourages the art industry, collaboration with the private sector has become a trend. A proliferation of private foundations and museums has been founded to provide various platforms for the exchange and practice of art and discussion. These private initiatives function to fill the gap left by bureaucracy and scarce resources from the government, serving as a parallel force in cultivating the field. This talk will introduce the background and discuss how these private initiatives interact with the art infrastructure in Taiwan. The talk is co-presented by Asia Art Archive and 1a space. About the Speaker: Lai Hsiangling is an independent curator based in Taiwan. She received her Master’s degree in art history from the University of Kansas and studied at the Museum Studies Program at George Washington University. Formerly a curator at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, she has more than 20 years of experience in curatorial practice and management in Taiwan. In addition, she served as Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei, Executive Director of the Dimension Endowment of Art, and Head of the Grant Department of the National Culture and Arts Foundation in Taiwan. She was also the Founding Director of Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai. In 2001, she was the recipient of a joint fellowship from the National Culture and Arts Foundation and the Fulbright Commission for travel and research in the US. Ms. Lai currently serves on the Boards of the Dimension Endowment of Art and the Spring Foundation in Taiwan. 為配合未來的展覽及活動發展方針，1a空間於2013年初開展了短期的裝修工程，將有助提升展覽空間運用及觀賞體驗。1a空間將於2013年3月中重新開放予公眾參觀。

1a space is currently undergoing renovation in an effort to adapt the interior for future programmes and development. The work will allow more effective use of space in exhibitions and events, as well as improve viewing experience. 1a space will re-open to the public in mid-March with an exhibition.

Taiwan-Hong Kong Curator Exchange Programme Official Partner 1a Space Presents: A Talk by Wu Mali ‘Art as Social Engagement: Working in Community’ Date & Time: 19 January 2013 (Saturday), 3-5pm Venue: 1a Space (Unit 14, Cattle Depot Artist Village, 63 Ma Tau Kok Road, To Kwa Wan, Hong Kong) The talk is conducted in Mandarin and Cantonese. Background 1a Space is proud to present a talk by renowned Taiwanese curator and multi-disciplinary artist Wu Mali, titled ‘Art as Social Engagement: Working in Community’ on 19th January. The talk is the first in a series of eventsdesigned for the inaugural ‘Taiwan-Hong Kong Curator Exchange Programme’ in 2012-13. The exchange programme is organized by the National Culture and Arts Foundation (NCAF) in Taiwan. Theme In recent years, there has been a number of attempts to bring art into communities in Hong Kong, while social engagement has become something of a hot topic in art. Wu Mali will explore the topic of community art in her talk based on her experience in organizing art projects for various Taiwanese local groups, and discuss the different facets of socially engaging art with the audience in Hong Kong. Contact local artists The exchange programme will culminate in an exhibition curated by Wu Mali on community art in Taiwan and Hong Kong. As preparation for the exhibition, she is keen to get in touch with community art practitioners in Hong Kong, in order to gain a better understanding of the current condition in which this type of art operates. Artists and all those who are interested in this kind of projects are welcome to contact her during her stay in Hong Kong. Wu Mali’s Bio Wu Mali is currently Assistant Professor and Head of Graduate Institute of Interdisciplinary Art in the National Kaohsiung Normal University. After graduating from the National Art Academy, Dusseldorf, Germany, Wu returned to Taiwan in 1985 and focused on creating critical artworks that respond to the political and social reality at the time. In recent years she has devoted much of her energy to organizing community art activities, with the aim of going beyond criticism and use creative thinking to push for real changes. Her community art projects include ‘Awakening from Your Skin’ (2000-2004), which encouraged local women to explore and reconsider their own bodies and minds through playing with textiles; ‘Tracing Danshui River’ (2006), ‘A Cultural Action on Tropic of Cancer’ (2006-7), and more recently ‘A Cultural Action on Plum Tree Creek’ (2011). Upcoming Events Celebrated local writer and critic Mr. Ma Kwok Ming will give a talk on 26th January (3-5pm) at 1a Space, where he will discuss art’s intervention in the public sphere from the perspective of Walter Benjamin’s seminal essay ‘The Author as Producer’. The in-depth discussion may inspire practitioners to think about community art from an unusual point of view. Ms. Lai Hsiang-ling, the director of Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Taipei, will give a talk on 7th March (time to be confirmed) in Hong Kong upon the invitation of 1a Space and Asia Art Archive. She will speak about the development of curating as a practice in Taiwan. The talk will take place at Asia Art Archive.
