- Architect of Bamboo Rotunda —— Haynie Sze
The Bamboo Rotunda has a unique design compared to traditional Cantonese Opera bamboo theatres. To understand why, we interviewed its architect, Haynie Sze. She explained that bamboo was chosen because it is abundant on Yim Tin Tsai Island and has historical significance as ”Fung Shui Wood“ for protecting villagers. Bamboo is also renewable, sustainable, and strong yet lightweight. “The Bamboo Rotunda’s shape resembles a seashell from above and a bird nest from the ground, both symbolising the concept of ‘home’. The design aims to make people feel comfortable and merge with the nature.” The Bamboo Rotunda serves as a rest area for both villagers and visitors, and connects the image of sky, ocean and land throughout the imagination of the architecture. Haynie emphasized that bamboo allows for natural ventilation, with hot air flowing out through skylights. The design integrates seamlessly with nature, providing a sense of ”home“ and a comfortable appreciation of the surroundings. Whether viewing it from the outside or inside, the Bamboo Rotunda gives everyone a sense of ‘home’ and allows them to appreciate nature comfortably. We hope this insight into the Bamboo Rotunda‘s design enhances your understanding. We look forward to welcoming you to join our event in Yim Tin Tsai village to experience Haynie’s design firsthand once construction is complete!

- Bamboo Generations’ Facilitators —— KK, Janice and Kan Sir
The first workshop of 𝑬.𝑪𝑶 𝑹𝒐𝒕𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒂 —— ‘Bamboo Chair - DIY Creativity’ is concluded successfully on 18 May 2024. Many thanks to Bamboo Generations for hosting this event, and special thanks to all the participants for their active engagement. Both facilitators and participants have contributed to the Bamboo Rotunda construction with the bamboo chairs they crafted during this event. Throughout the two workshops, the participants not only gained valuable knowledge about bamboo as a construction material but also applied their newly acquired skills to craft bamboo chairs. We also took this opportunity to interview the facilitators from Bamboo Generations — KK, Janice and Kan Sir. During our conversation, they shared their perspectives on bamboo and their experiences participating in the Bamboo Rotunda building. “Bamboo is a unique construction material that can replace plastic, metal, and wood in various applications. Many countries are now utilising bamboo as a sustainable alternative to these traditional materials.” —— KK When asked about the characteristics of bamboo and the traditional craftsmanship of bamboo, KK pointed out that while many people are constantly promoting energy sustainability, material sustainability is often overlooked. Bamboo, among many materials, not only achieves material sustainability but can also replace materials such as plastic, metal, and wood. Kan Sir and Janice believed that this unique traditional craftsmanship of bamboo should be preserved and promoted widely. "I do not have a professional qualification in bamboo scaffolding, but I am honoured to be able to contribute to the construction of the Bamboo Rotunda by making bamboo chairs." —— Janice “It is rare to see architecture made of bamboo from time to time in Hong Kong, therefore I feel honoured to be able to participate in this Bamboo Rotunda construction” —— Kan Sir When asked about their feeling of participation in the construction of the Bamboo Rotunda, all the facilitators from Bamboo Generation are satisfied. Janice and Kan Sir both felt honoured to be part of the Bamboo Rotunda construction, while KK believed that the construction of bamboo chairs not only could be a part of the Bamboo Rotunda but also a meaningful experience that anyone could participate in. We hope the sharing of the Bamboo Generations’ facilitators can help you learn more about bamboo. When the Bamboo Rotunda is officially completed, we are looking forward to seeing you try out the craftsmanship of the students and facilitators!
