Somewhere on the sea, there are countless sole floating platforms. Occasionally, they approach each other, at where they meet may generate different shapes of land through different forms of collision. They merge, push, or separate. The process of encounter is uncontrollable yet malleable. Initiated by the Cultivating Peace Project of Hong Kong Baptist University, it involves a group of university students, secondary school students and Hong Kong artists to meet and work together for several months. Through community tours, group sharings, creative exercises, etc., they get to know each other and explore the possibility of interpersonal and community peace. Through a series of works, the exhibition attempts to explore the changing distance and boundary between people, trace the balance point of relationship in the process, and at the same time connect to a broader context of the local community. Floating platforms challenge the trust between us and others. Before stability, may this process bring you to some wider lands. 展覽日期 Exhibition Period: 4-14/5/2023 11:00 - 19:00 地點 Venue: 1a space(香港九龍土瓜灣馬頭角道63號牛棚藝術村14號 Unit 14, Cattle Depot Artist Village, 63 Ma Tau Kok Road, To Kwa Wan, Kowloon, Hong Kong) 開幕 Opening: 日期 Date: 4/5/2023 (四 Thur) 時間 Time: 17:30-18:30 地點 Venue: 香港九龍土瓜灣馬頭角道63號牛棚藝術村8號 Unit 8, Cattle Depot Artist Village, 63 Ma Tau Kok Road, To Kwa Wan, Kowloon, Hong Kong 參展藝術家 Participating artists: 島仔藝術 Dou Chai Arts 鄧國騫 Kwok-hin Tang Rajat Sharma 梁翠萍 Sally Leung 李卓媛 Sharon Lee 蕭俞 Zoe Siu 參與學校 Participating schools: 聖公會諸聖中學 S.K.H. • Open Call for Artists, Curators & Researchers Trio

1a space is pleased to announce an open call for trio group(s) composed of an artist, a curator and a researcher to participate in the Mid-Career Artist Exhibition & Publication Series. In response to the shortage of mid-career retrospectives in Hong Kong and the need of documenting and researching the local art ecology, we aim to initiate a long-term commitment to a series of comprehensive solo exhibitions and high-quality publications dedicated to mid-career artists. Through demonstrating an artist’s creative process in a thorough and inclusive manner to the general public, the project serves to acknowledge and encourage prolonged artistic practices. In addition, by facilitating dynamic collaborations between leading Hong Kong artists, curators, and researchers, we hope to invite reflections upon different roles and possibilities in exhibition-making. We seek to support a trio consisted of an artist, a curator, and a researcher, to realise a solo exhibition at the 1a space gallery in early 2022, coupled with an artist monograph publication. Pairing a deserving curatorial talent with a mid-career artist, the survey exhibition is expected to make visible the progression of an artist’s journey, demonstrating how an artist reflects, reconfigures and rejects idea. The project also sees curatorial research as a core component in tandem with exhibition planning. We intend to develop cohesive and well-contextualized retrospectives that fill in the gap between larger public institutions and commercial galleries. In accompany with the exhibition, public programmes such as artist talks and guided tours will be organized, inviting the local community to interact with the artist, curator and researcher, and to expand related discussions. To further anchor the exhibition in the wider local art discourse, the selected researcher will be responsible to conduct research and produce essay(s) focused on the artist. The publication shall include, but is not limited to, introductory essay(s), biographical information on the artist, analyses of works of art, artwork illustrations and installation images of the exhibition. While the exhibition and related programmes are temporal events, the academic monograph produced will continue to contribute to the research of local art as a helpful and permanent resource. Successful applicants will receive: - Administration and venue support - Publication support (including book designing, artwork and exhibition photography support, ISBN registration, collecting and sorting out cataloguing details, etc.) - Production fee for each participating artist, curator and researcher - Press materials and PR support Eligibility: - Applicants must be living and working in Hong Kong, or Hong Kong artists/curators/researchers living and working abroad. • “Per/Platform Live Art Festival” cancelled

1a space announces that “Per/Platform Live Art Festival” has been cancelled. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.

  • Per/Platform 2021 - Open Call for performance

1a space is inviting artists from all disciplines within the field of contemporary art to submit performance art projects for the first edition of the live art festival Per/Platform taking place in the historical building of Cattle Depot Artist Village between July and August 2021. Co-curated by Juliana Chan and Florence Lam, the festival will host a dynamic programme of performances featuring both experienced performance artists and young artists, who are interested in exploring the practice. Successful applicants will be given artists honorarium and material fees, as well as guidance from established performance artists. In performance art, "art" is embodied within the people, and the people are embodiments, products, and responses to their surroundings. It is manifested by one's actions. The fundamental materials of a performance artist consist of one's very own body; one's presence; space, where the body can be; and time, which enables the longevity and the ephemerality of the artwork itself, the element of being "live". Thus, at the occasion of Per/Platform, we seek to learn together how to be human, and to express and develop it in the realm of art. For 2021 we invite artists to explore different ways of interpreting Light and express through performance how they understand light. In its most basic form, light is a form of energy. It is white and iridescent. It has been seen as the symbol of life and intellectual enlightenment. In ancient Chinese pictography, the character Light is represented by a kneeling person lifting a fire bowl. Some people believe it is a slave lifting the fire for the master while others think it depicts a scene of pyromancy, an art of divination by fire. While the meaning of the image remains a dispute, in both interpretations light originates from a body in action. Similarly, the definition of performance art is based on the temporal and physical co-presence of the performer’s body to convey meaning. Application Process - The open call is aimed at young and emerging artists aged 18 and above who are living and working in Hong Kong. We welcome artists working in the field of contemporary art with any disciplinary backgrounds who are interested in performance art. - To apply, please send the following documents in one PDF file within 10 pages and no larger than 10 MB in total to info@oneaspace.org.hk - An artist statement which provides an overview of the applicant’s artistic practice - CV and portfolio of the of the applicant. - Performance proposal of max 500 words in English or 800 words in Chinese. The proposal should include supported visual material of the performance, video links (if any), estimated duration of the performance and technical requirement. - Each artist is able to submit one proposal only. The application deadline is Sunday, 23 May 2021, 7pm. Selection Process Submissions are evaluated by a committee that includes representatives of 1a space and experts from the contemporary art field. Applications are evaluated based on the applicant’s artistic merit and the applicant’s potential for collaborations. Obligations The successful applicants may be required to take part in at least one public programming event (artist sharing, public workshop etc). The artist must comply with the rule in connection to the preservation of heritage buildings of Cattle Depot.

  • 【Fill in the Space】Artists-in-Residence

The response of “Fill in the Space” was overwhelming and we received many exciting proposals from different artists. After careful considerations and discussions, we have selected 6 artists as the artists-in-resident of the Programme and they have started their residency in early May. We are excited for their creation and exchange during the residency. Participating artists include: Meko Cheng Meko Cheng received her B.A fine art from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2019. Her work is about representation of material, weight and physical manifestation. Through its balanced structure, the material shows a limited relationship with time. Dave Chow Dave Chow graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University, where he received his Bachelor Degree in 2015. He is especially interested in the meaning of objects and the physicality of materials. His works display and distill his everyday experience through appropriating, transforming and assembling ready-made objects and images. He currently lives and works in Hong Kong. He has held his first solo exhibition, “Switch on the Television When the Sun Sets” during the artist in-residency program in Experimental Sound Studio, Chicago. His works were also exhibited in various exhibitions, including “EQUILIBRIUM” (Foo Tak Building, Hong Kong, 2018), “Observe / Scrutinise / Perceive” (Gallery Exit, 2018) and “again and again” (common room & co., Hong Kong, 2018). Michele Chu Michele Chu is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice explores intimacy and human connection in her works, specifically the interplay between sensory elements and space, to amplify the emotional connection between individuals.
