Travel to Learn in the City (Research Report)

From Concept to Practice

 

'Creative talents and an appreciative public' do not emerge out of thin air. Therefore, there is an urgent need for our society to develop and nurture such individuals. We believe that the very root of creativity begins with education.

 

In early 2008, the two initiators of the project began with continuous discussions over a preliminary concept: to transform the conventional school guided-tour formats—which were often 'pre-packaged', 'didactic', or 'overly permissive'—and establish a progressively deepening art learning experience. This journey spans from pre-tour preparation and first-hand experience during the tour, to extended learning post-tour. But how could we enable students to move from 'forgetting what they see instantly' to 'retaining it forever'?

 

Consequently, a strategic team comprising frontline visual arts teachers, arts and culture researchers, and arts administrators was formed. They pooled their respective expertise—encompassing teaching and curriculum design, arts and cultural appreciation paradigms, and networks with artists and arts groups. Following over a year of continuous deliberation, consultation, research, and validation, they ultimately conceived and planned the 'Travel to Learn in the City' project. This pilot initiative aims to build art appreciation learning experiences and internalize arts and cultural essence through the hands-on experiences of both teachers and students.
