in-between international community-initiated art space

Our chosen title, 'in-between', denotes frames of reference. 'In-between' could be paraphrased as 'between the two'; a search of ways to go from one point to another; being in an ambivalent state, opened and nonconformist; or exploring more than one possibility. 'In-between' implies feasibility in the choices of ideas. Perhaps many art spaces are at the state of 'in-between' and are at the same time searching for and experimenting with more 'in-between' ideas.

 

Independent art spaces in Hong Kong have a short history, with debate surrounding terms like 'alternative' or 'independent' that reflect different organizational philosophies. Following discussions on November 17-18, 2001, adopting 'community-initiated' as a comprehensive term appears more appropriate.

 

Art spaces act as crucial 'in-between' bridges connecting artists, production, curation, promotion, and audience development, forming diverse, non-singular structures that shape the cultural ecosystem as intermediaries.
