Architect of Bamboo Rotunda —— Haynie Sze

The Bamboo Rotunda has a unique design compared to traditional Cantonese Opera bamboo theatres. To understand why, we interviewed its architect, Haynie Sze. She explained that bamboo was chosen because it is abundant on Yim Tin Tsai Island and has historical significance as ”Fung Shui Wood“ for protecting villagers. Bamboo is also renewable, sustainable, and strong yet lightweight.
“The Bamboo Rotunda’s shape resembles a seashell from above and a bird nest from the ground, both symbolising the concept of ‘home’. The design aims to make people feel comfortable and merge with the nature.”
