State Tretyakov Gallery: the Female Images in 19th-Century Europe
Carey Wong Lai Hung
Struggles and life of European women from all classes. These paintings scattered in different halls of the Gallery, coupled with other impressionist and realist paintings, as if they were daily life of Europe and Russia. The following four paintings were selected as they depicted the audacious image, struggles and imaginary image of women, which remains special topics. From suffering to defiance, it symbolises the awakening of European females. This essay will shed lights on the works by Ivan Kramskoi, Pavel Fedotov, Evgraf Sorokin and Mikhail Vrubel, who were dominant in the Russian art world in the 19th Century.
