《開口笑，畫寫跳》: 銀髮藝術展覽是個動詞
在工業資本主義領航下，人的價值早跟機械等同，都以生產力為依歸，貪新求快，只要多，不可停。退休後的長者，常難聽地被形容為用完即棄的廢紙，跟「衰弱」、「無用」、「過時」及「負擔」等字眼連成一體。在當代藝術世界裡，不論作為觀眾、創作人、評論人，長者更是長期缺席。但這代表他們沒有藝術創造力嗎? 當然不。
位位銀髮都是一本看不完的小說。但，他們不應只是被看，被照顧，從上而下被憐惜的對象，其實，他們一樣可以起動，表達跟年輕人不同的情感經驗、藝術感知、生活實感。他們的藝術創作潛力或被戰火
侵吞、或被生活磨蝕、或欠缺鼓勵而被年歲一一壓下。
由九龍城區議會及九龍城民政事務處合辦，1a空間協助籌劃的九龍城區文化藝術節2013/2014之創意銀髮在龍城的作品成果展，就是跟九龍城區銀髮街坊朋友互動的階段性成果。自二零一三年十月開始，由1a空間設計及執行課程內容，並提供基本的藝術及技術支援下，以免費公開的方式，讓九龍城區內六十歲或以上的銀髮街坊每星期參與三組工作坊，包括「自在說」、「自然畫」及「自由舞」，用較互動、開放及有趣的方法誘發點與點的連線，包括長者跟年輕藝術家、長者跟不同的藝術創作媒體、長者跟自己的身體、長者生活空間及藝術空間的連接，同時，努力打開獨特有趣的互動經驗。
也許，長者的作品，美學上沒有突破，也未必有驚喜，但要是看過他們起舞時的美麗、畫畫時的專注，說故事時的剔透，就知道，在適當時間給他們一支筆、一張畫紙、一個手鼓或一段音樂，就有不一樣的可能。
另一角度來說，這個展覽展出的是經驗、關係及笑聲。事實上，社群及社區藝術都不是幾個月可以完成，因為關係網絡才是其中的要角。我們過去幾個月，每個星期跟長者談天、說笑、舞動、打鼓、寫生，都只是創建空間上的可能，真正以孩子的眼光觀察，以自由的心境舞動，以豁達開懷的心情分享私密故事的是他們：一班走過戰火、經歷香港變遷、等待重建、生活經驗豐厚的九龍城區銀髮街坊。而他們的生命力，反過來，影響我們參與的藝術家。因此，當中互動的有機關係，也是展覽的一個重要部份。

A Sound and Video Installation Exhibition that Fuses with Taoism
CCDC Media Lab, established by City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC), not only explores the possibilities of non-conventional performance space, but also aims to breakthrough the boundary of performing arts by combining dance with visual arts. For the first time, CCDC presents Momentum II, a sound and video installation exhibition. Momentum comprises of two parts: Episode I is a site-specific performance which was held on 22 and 23 March, attracting more than 1,200 audience members to Mount Austin Playground on the Peak for the performance; Episode II is a sound and visual installation exhibition which will be held from 18 April to 10 May at 1a Space Gallery, Cattle Depot Artist Village. In a former slaughterhouse, Chinese culture will be reinterpreted in the realm of modern arts.
Merging Taoism with Multimedia
CCDC Media Lab invited famous musician and composer Dickson Dee to collaborate with dancer, choreographer and winner of multiple Hong Kong Dance Awards, Xing Liang, to create Momentum II. In conceiving the piece, Dickson refers to the theory of Five Elements and Eight Trigrams to create a framework. He uses “Tao” to highlight the increasingly serious environmental problems caused by rapid globalisation and to encourage us to get closer to nature, listen to her sounds, be grateful and caring.
A Private Yet Interactive Journey
Momentum II is held in a confined gallery space. Dickson layouts the multimedia and sound installations according to the Nine Halls Diagram, Eight Trigrams and Five Elements. Visitors are invited to take part in an interactive game according to their own Chinese zodiac signs on a tailor-made App. During the private journey, visitors will find quietness and serenity in this loud and bustling city. There will be a dance demonstration choreographed by Xing Liang at the opening ceremony on 17 April. The multimedia devices and a recording of the dance performance will be on display at the gallery till 10 May.
Momentum is produced by CCDC Media Lab, an initiative newly established by CCDC in 2013. With support from the Contestable Funding Pilot Scheme of the Home Affairs Bureau, it aims to explore the possibility and potential of combining dance with various media, breakthrough the conventional practice of modern dance performance and offer audience extraordinary experiences.

I am a firm believer that education can never be done behind four walls. I bring students out of the classroom into the community and the streets where they will meet in person the different faces of lives. The diverse experiences invoke inspirations rationally and emotionally. Students will only grow and acquire critical thinking under these circumstances. This is a learning classrooms and text books cannot deliver.
Deeply inspired by the Pink Floyd´s movie, ¨THE WALL¨, I always remind myself not to complicit with the school system. For 18 years, I have been trying to open up learning spaces for ideological as well as sentimental education, in a bid to escape from the constraints of the already obsolete teaching method. Let art lives with our daily living. Let teaching be part of the democratic movement. By keeping pace with changes in the society and the world at large, I hope students could better serve as critical and responsible citizens and help build a more humane civil society.

“On the Road” is curated by the established local artist Linda Lai. It will showcase the exploration of uncharted territories by eight young artists, focusing on the processes and the experiences that constitute discovery. Most of the artworks are intermedia experiments that slowly crystallized through the collisions between the curator and the artists: these include drawing installation, performative photography, soundscape combined with cinemagraph and more. Some of the artists attempt to broaden viewing experience through interactivity and discover the multiple possibilities of ‘creative media’.
All of the eight young artists are currently studying at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong, and they are all at the starting point on the road of artmaking. But their cultural backgrounds are diverse: Allison Hung, Shon Myokyung and Diptee Thapa are from Taiwan, South Korea and India respectively, while Hanz Au, Angson Chow, Karen Hau, Harry Hon and Yan Wai Yin are born and bred in Hong Kong. Hanz is the guitarist of the critically acclaimed math rock band Prune Deer. Yan Wai Yin is a member of the PageNEXT project by Asia Art Archive. Angson Chow and Harry Hon both started taking part in the Incubator for Film & Visual Media in Asia (ifva) competition since they were in secondary school, and both have been shortlisted in the past as finalists in the Youth Category.
To turn one’s feelings and experiences into a creative work and to experiment with different kinds of materials: both processes are highly personal, but what kind of bridge do we need in order to turn it around for the enjoyment and engagement of others? This is the question that “On the Road” set out to explore, and must be addressed by the young artists through the experience of preparing for an exhibition.
Curator Dr. Linda Lai is Associate Professor at the School of Creative Media, cross-disciplinary artist and founder of local new media group Writing Machine Collective. Her video, installation and digital works like Door Games Window Frames: Near Drama (2012), Non-place/Other Space (2009), Voices Seen, Images Heard (2009) have been widely screened and exhibited in film festivals and exhibitions in Hong Kong, New York, Paris, Oberhausen, Barcelona, Taipei, Shanghai and Seoul, including 2012 Hong Kong Contemporary Awards (2013), 9th Shanghai Biennale (2012-13), Descriptions of Hearing (Taipei, 2012), One World Exposition (Hong Kong, 2011-12), 2003 Hong Kong Art Biennial. Lai is concerned with the ups and downs of young people’s creative journeys, and in the past has curated exhibitions focusing on young artists: Micro Narratives: Invented Time & Space (2006, 2011, 2012), Archiving FIngers, Hands, Faces & Anonymities (2010), and Take a ST/Roll: donut fantasies (2005, Para/Site).
From drawing and writing to video and interactive installations, “On the Road” covers a myriad of experiments with media. Using computer programming and sensor technology, Shon Myokyung boldly questions the hierarchy between professional and amateur artmaking, and explores new possibilities of appreciating art in the smartphone era. Diptee Thapa, who now lives in Spain, designed a long-term art project in which she scrutinizes anonymous Spanish villages from the perspective of an outsider. For her photography is at once a record and the instantaneous act of connecting to the people, objects and events here and now. Angson Chow uses sound as an entry point to evoke our hearing ability, and to regain control over a daily life that to him is alienating. Karen Hau’s 30 x 3 totem of daily emotions is an urge for constant and divergent change. She would have to discover the hidden treasure together with her visitors by figuring out how to show her material physically.
1a space, venue sponsor for “On the Road”, is located at the heritage site of Cattle Depot. It has been at the forefront of the local art scene for the past 16 years, having presented many important experimental exhibitions such as I Think It Rains (2013) and Kai Tak River Green Art Fest 2012 Exhibition: Is/Is Not Kai Tak River a Metaphor (2012).

A nowadays story: A schoolchild has been assigned to make a craftwork of recycled materials. The parents deliberately bought some cartons of milk and bottled juice so to “produce” enough recycled materials which would be collaged by a glue gun. The outcome seemingly fits the theme but how many would question wastes produced and resources consumed during the process? Does this kind of craftwork serve its purpose or cause more damages to the environment?
“isn’t’s own isn’t” – a solo exhibition by LING Chin Tang, Parry – aims to magnify such ridiculous “eco-friendly” phenomena in disguise, symbolised by his free-standing polar bear figurines. From freezing-in-progress polar bears to documentation of resource and energy consumption, the presentation reveals the dilemma between the exhibits (art) and the environment (reality). Extended documentation can be found on the internet to cross-check if this exhibition concludes a deficit or a surplus in its balance sheet, in terms of environmental cost. Audience understanding and interpretation would evolve or get confused along the visit.
About environmental protection it may seem, “isn’t’s own isn’t” intends to illustrate this concept in other contemporary issues. People may distort their original intention in order to achieve certain goals. As Daoism puts it, “There should not be the practice of what is good with any thought of the fame (which it will bring), nor of what is evil with any approximation to the punishment (which it will incur).” To artists and anyone, it is a reminder not to be blinded and deviated from one’s inner quest.
“isn’t’s own isn’t” taken from E. E. Cummings’ poem darling! because my blood can sing implies the helplessness of self-denial; in this exhibition, self-denial appears as the dilemma between the process and the result, as well as the beginning and the end.

YIP Kin Bon Solo Exhibition:“ Almost black, the white terror Almost white, the black humor ”
I need to throw myself into a toil totally driven by imagination in order to resist the futility of everyday life. Sometimes, perhaps I’m not even resisting, but only concealing the void of it. This futility is bred from the absurdity encompassing all possible dimensions of life. When absurdity spreads in a speed beyond mortal imagination, every individual shrinks into insignificance much more than ever in the face of senseless and strained matters.
The starting point of this exhibition is set at my habit of newspaper reading - I pay a lot of attention to how Hong Kong is reported in the news. After reading “ Qiao xiaoyang’s speech at the conference on 24 March 2013 with the partial attendance of members from the Hong Kong Legislative Council ”, I started collecting words used in speeches from newspapers as the irrefutable evidence of a general absurdity, trying to defy the subject matter from the context of the same text itself. Finally, I attained a tittle of control betwixt reality and imagination. I also discovered varied possibilities in “ newspaper ”, “ paper ”, and “ photography ” wherefrom I developed into my works such as “ A monument to Hong Kong People ”, “ Stuck in there ” and “ In the wrong place ”.
WU Siu Man Solo Exhibition: “Please keep it in your mind, the memory before I die”
Nourished by the dead, Higanbana (Flower of the other shore) bloomed along the way to the underworld, guiding souls of the dead on their path. Every Higanbana is a faded life, together they contribute to the only scenery en route. Fragrance of the flowers dwelled in the air, bringing back memories of the previous life for the one last time.
Art as Social Interaction: Hong Kong / Taiwan Exchange

In recent years, artists and non-profit organizations in Taiwan and Hong Kong re-focused on the functions of art as a form of education and a way to enable viewers' re-examination of their out-looks on life.
These communities also actively engage in the discussion of issues such as civil awareness, community life, and cultural capital by launching various creative projects, coalitions, and calls to action.
Art as Social Interaction: Hong Kong / Taiwan Exchange expects to connect the two places and deepen the understanding of the influences and meaning of this particular art form in the specific social context of each community through exhibitions, workshops, and dialogues in forums.

龍城藝彩樂悠悠－牛棚藝集 作品成果展

「龍城藝彩樂悠悠—牛棚藝集」由九龍城區節日慶祝活動籌劃工作小組轄下「文化藝術活動」活動小組主辦，九龍城區議會和九龍城民政事務處合辦，並由1a空間推行。此計劃邀請區內街坊參加創意工作坊，及後舉行為期十六天的作品成果展，連結藝術家、參與者和九龍城社區。
在「牛棚藝集」的牽引下，參與者放慢腳步走過既熟悉又陌生的街道，藝術家示範以不同切入點觀察社區，大家同看路邊店舖小物，看十三街唐樓的生活痕跡，在天台俯瞰社區的變化與發展；由觀察開始，然後紀錄，思考，再以攝影、拼貼、文字、布藝及偶發行動表達想法與印象。
在連續幾個周末的工作坊，我們看着創意悄然生成，當中的過程，是這次成果展側重展現的面向。但我們也深知，這樣的連接是暫時的，參與者在有限的時間訪尋過土瓜灣之後，還會不會持續關注這個地方，會不會深化觀察與創作，都未可知，唯一可肯定的，只有因這次人與人、人與社區連接而留下的淡淡印痕，以及對於「2014年秋／土瓜灣」這個特定時空的一點想法。
過後，沙中線終會建成，舊樓終被拆毀，但我們始終記得曾齊聚於這一刻，在繼續進步的城市之中，向我們的社區投以關注，以觀察者與紀錄者的身份，為社區留下記憶的註腳。
